This is a food related condition that requires a team of professionals working in harmony. In the United States, as many as 10 million females and 1 million males struggle with an eating disorder. Approximately 225 million more are struggling with binge eating disorder.

Because of the secrecy and shame associated with eating disorders, it is very likely that many more cases of these deadly diseases are not reported. For the first time ever, brain-imaging studies can actually identify the specific locations of neurotransmitters related to eating disorders and how they influence the course of the disease.

What are neurotransmitters? They are the little messengers in the brain that give us all kinds of information, like what to eat and not to eat. There are neurons that consist of axons and dendrites. Between them there is what I call a no manís land. In that space the impulses travel without connections.

That is when nutrition and diet is important. The chemicals that make up this transport system consist of proteins, vitamins and minerals. If ( for whatever reason) the chain of healthy components that make up this message system get intercepted, the wrong messages get sent to the wrong places.

We donít have all the answers yet. But the old adage "You are what you eat," holds some merit. Each individual must know more about their bodies and how they function------and as you would expect me to say, be sure you put the right things in to make it work.

Your team of healthcare practitioners will help you and your family to know pieces of the puzzle that can be quantified. We are constantly looking for new answers.
