All About Vitamins | Vitamin B1 (Thiamin)

Continuing our series on vitamins that are in every NGX nutrition pouch, we are now examining Vitamin B1, also known as Thiamin. Although it has been named Vitamin B, it was discovered in 1910, three years before Vitamin A.

Function

Vitamin B1 is an important part of the diet for a number of reasons; it can help protect and prevent complications in brain function, the nervous system, your muscles, heart and stomach. It is particularly good at preventing diseases like Beriberi which is a disorder of the heart, nerves and digestive system.

Recent reports have shown that a number of professional athletes in the USA are now using Vitamin B1 supplements as part of their performance nutrition, because of its impact on the muscles and the heart.

Sources

As with most vitamins, you find a high content of vitamin B in most meats or animal products, however, there are plenty of plant-based sources of Vitamin B1 such as; cauliflower, broccoli, asparagus, potatoes, and kale.

Deficiency

As mentioned above, if you are deficient in vitamin B1 you risk contracting Beriberi which affects your nervous and circulatory systems, and can even lead to heart failure. It can also lead to muscle weakness and wastage.

The best way to see if you are converting the vitamins out of your diet properly is with a DNA test. Explore the NGX website and pick up a DNA test to understand how your body operates at a genetic level.
